Electrolysis - Hair Removal

Electrolysis is the only proven method for permanent hair removal with a history of over a century long. Today electrolysis is an ideal alternative when laser is not the right option.  Electrolysis will permanently remove unwanted hair to reveal hair-free skin regardless of the cause or hair type, as it can treat all hair types including blonde, red, and grey hair. Electrolysis is perfect for small areas, such as the upper lip, facial hair, and underarms.

The treatment is performed using a medical electrolysis device and involves inserting of a very fine sterile needle (usually thinner than the hair being treated) into the natural opening of the hair follicle alongside the hair shaft. A tiny amount of electrical current is then applied to destroy the three main hair structures called the bulge, the bulb and papilla, all of which cause hair to grow and regenerate.

The 3 Stages Of Hair Growth

Electrolysis treats hair effectively in active growth stage called anagen phase only. Each growth cycle includes an anagen, catagen, and telogen phase. During the anagen phase, the hair grows actively from the follicle. The next phase of the growth cycle is the catagen phase. This is a short transitional period in which the hair stops growing and the hair follicle shrinks in size. The follicle breaks away from the dermal papilla, which supplies nutrients to the hair follicle. The dermal papilla then regresses. The last phase of the growth cycle is the telogen, or resting phase. During the telogen phase, the hair follicle reattaches to the dermal papilla, at which point the follicle re-enters the anagen phase. As a new hair begins to grow, the old hair is pushed out of the follicle.

What Causes Unwanted Hair Growth?

The causes of extra hair growth can include hereditary issues, genetics can influence whether you have a lot of body hair or not. Hormone levels such as high levels of androgens, as well as testosterone, the male hormone can influence the amount of hair we grow. Certain drugs, such as steroids and illnesses like polycystic ovary syndrome. These can all play a part in unwanted hair.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

You will need several treatments, the number of sessions needed to achieve permanent hair removal will differ from person to person. Typically, you will need an appointment every week or every other week. The appointments can last up to a year and a half.

The length of the appointment for the treatment depends on the area being treated, the type of hair wanting to be removed. Treatment times can vary from 15 mins to an hour.

Why Do I Need So Many Treatments?

Hairs have different growth cycles. Your hair follicle produces a hair then discards it through shedding. The hair production cycle is a process of growth, rest, and replacement, (anagen, catagen and telogen). Individual hairs are in different phases of this cycle. More than one treatment catches the hairs at the right point in the cycle to destroy them.

What To Avoid After Electrolysis?

Avoid anything that causes sweating, tanning and sunbeds. Avoid applying make up to the area, touching the treated skin. Swimming and spa pool, any heat.
